I have just returned back to Steamoat after another stretch on the road, this time to the Copper Rev Tour and the Aspen Open. SO good to see old shred buddy friends, coaches and all the riders and event organizers out there getting it done. Every where there is a feeling of pride because the sport has progressed in incredible ways in the past 2 seasons. With the recent approach to the Vancouver Olympics, more and more events in 22 foots pipe, and more and more riders rising into the real of 10s, 12s, doubles and huge stylish amplitude, The entire field of riders and coaches seem to feel lucky to observe and participate.

I love it.

Jan 4, Kevin Pearces head injury and its effect on riders and the sport of snowboarding

Recently, one of snowboardings best half pipe riders, Kevin Pearce, took a catastrophic fall while training for Olympic Qualification.

His crash sent shock waves through the field of riders and fans that have watched him rise to stardom in the world of snowboarding. Over the past couple seasons the level of riders like Kevin Pearce has been rising at an amazing rate with the introduction of 22 foot half pipes and double flips that the best riders are sticking on a regular basis.

Among the field of riders and the support groups involved, Kevins Crash is a sad and untimely reminder of the dangers of the sport. It calls attention to the fact that every rider out there pushing hard for a bigger trick or a better result, runs the risk of serious bodily injury.

It is often difficult for coaches, the riders parents, friends and support groups to encourage a rider to do things we all know are very dangerous.

How do we as parents, coaches and fans of these sports support the athletes with out pushing them into danger?

Well, I don't know. It is scary sometimes. But, we can't express that to the athlete, because as soon as they become scared, they are in more danger. As fear creeps in, so does hesitation and breaks in the precise timing required for these kinds of activities.

So, we give them a hug, say be smart, good luck and have fun. Then we cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Kevin knows what he does is "crazy", and he loves doing it. He would not want us to back down and stop the progression because we're afraid of the possibility of injury.

The riders love snowboarding and will not stop. The sport is a driving force in their lives and they will continue to push themselves towards amazing mastery of athletic skill and bravery.

Kevins fall may slow some and even scare a few away from the amplitude and double flipping antics of the best of the best. But, riders like Shaun White, Louie Vito, Kazu Kokubo, and many other will continue to ride at higher and higher levels.

Lifes too short to hold back from passion due to fear. I support these riders in their efforts and hope that we can all just stop for a moment, appreciate the love Kevin has shown in his character and in his riding for the life he has been given, and go back out and land a sick run or make a pow turn for Kevin. He would like that.

Good Luck Kevin.
We're all rooting for you.

Aug 19, Creative Resumes, Finding Snowboarding Sponsorship
and Promotion of a Rider

So you want a Snowboarding Sponsorship, eh? Well, if you wanna turn pro, it is time to learn to be professional.

Ouch, that hurts, I know. Many riders want to just ride well, do some tricks, land on a podium or 2
and enjoy a rain of free stuff falling in their laps.
Unfortunately, that's not how it works.

The most important thing to question as a ripping rider with rising skills and sponsorship dreams
is the reality of what you're trying to achieve.
-So, what are you trying to achieve?

I would suggest that your ultimate goal is:
-To become a valuable marketing asset and a productive representative
for the companies that you would like to ride for.-

What?
There are many levels of sponsorship and the basic, entry level or "roots" level sponsorship is much more simple than this. Early sponsorships should help the rider learn and progress their approach to the business of the sport and promotin themselves in it.
Progression from there, for long term progression and successful marketing of oneself as a sponsored rider,
you must learn and execute the Five R's.

Aug 16, Fall is in the Air

I went camping last weekend and felt the chill of fall and even a new winter on approach. I became excited as I thought of all the teams, riders and coaches across the country who are chomping at the bit for the snow to come.

While a lucky few are down in the southern hemisphere riding powder and perfect parks, the rest of us just have to wait. But there is a certain sweetness to the waiting isn't there. It build and builds and when we finally buckle in
that joy and freedom hits hard.

So, patient and wait for it. The winter is on its way.

Jul 2, Summer Rolls

Hello Snowboard Coach Readers. I just wanted to drop a blog and say hello. I have had a great Mud Season here in Steamboat. I did go to Mammoth for the Junior Gold Camp there with Bud Keene, Ian Kirk, Ben Boyd
and a Kick Ass Crew of Riders.

Besides that I have been hammering on this site. Building it from an Infant into an Obnoxious Teenager.
It still has a long way to grow, but I am excited about new content I have built for it.
It was really fun to build the Snowboarding Styles Pages.

I posted lots of YouTube pieces to pay my respect to the riders that have influenced me,
and the entire industry in it's growth and current environment. Check it out...

Here is a sample. This is really 1996. Thank You Ingemar
