Quarterpipe Snowboarding Competition

What is it?

Many pro riders love Quarterpipe snowboarding competition. Although, they are not as common as Halfpipe and Slopestyle events, the Quarterpipe Contest is fun to compete in and fun to watch.

What does the competition venue consist of?

Most Quarterpipe events are hosted by a staff and a mountain or resort that is excited to put the time into building a huge QP for the event, which is amazing. Very often these events lead to record setting tricks and air -height off of the ground. The event venue consists of:
  • A huge Quarterpipe, sometimes as big as 25-30 feet. Incredible.
  • Fenced in Competitor Area to keep the crowd at a safe distance.
  • Judges booth
  • Starter to organize and radio rider names to judges.
  • DJ Booth
  • Sometimes a concession stand or 2 serving up frosty beverages.
Usually a quarterpipe snowboarding competition is Jam Format and a bit less serious the Pipe or Slope events. More of a party atmosphere.
  • Lots of people having fun

How do you win,or lose?

Judging panel – Usually 3 to 5 judges will score 1-10 or 1-100 on each rider each hit the rider takes. In most Quarterpipe events there is a variety of prizes, a Biggest Air Award, and a Best Trick Award, in addition to a normal ranking of riders.

Keys to Competing Well

Again, style, flow, and variety are the recipe. However there are a few other factors that play into the results for Quarterpipe events. Things like:
  • Go Big – Going big on a QP is hard and takes a long time and a lot of guts to learn to do. If you are comfortable to go big, then go huge.
  • Drifting – On some trick you don’t want to drift, on other you may drift a lot, on purpose. A backside 5 with a lot of drift and low amplitude, will not score as well as a backside 5 that is straight up and down with more amplitude. But if the rider is going for an Allyoop (rotating in the opposite direction of travel) and drifts dramatically with amplitude, that can be an even bigger score.
  • Landing high - A really great Quarterpipe rider, hardly takes any impact at all on a good hit. They seemingly ride the take-of transition and launch high into the air, then when it comes time to land, they simply put their feet back down on the vertical wall near the lip and smoothly ride back down.
