Straight Airs and Straight Up Flips Off Jumps

Straight Air - Non rotational air, with or with out a grab.
Front Flip - Most often a rider will approach the takeoff with weight over back foot, ready to shift weight towards the front foot with the takeoff pop to start the flip. Usually the flip rotates on the Y axis and has a cartwheel look. However, there are 2 other distinct ways to front flip. One is where the rider rotates the upper body and hips in the approach to the jump to face forward and flip around the X Axis. Or, they could do it more Barrel Roll, where the hips and upper body stay parallel to the board and flip around the X Axis. These are three distinct types of flips, however some riders may naturally blend a couple of them in the grey area, resulting in friends who observe the move to disagree and debate about what it was.
Lawn Dart - Late Front Flip, where the rider fully extends in the first half of the move, to stall out upside down, with arms to the side in a tall straight postition, then tucking the flip over at the last second. My friend Ben Hinkley used to win Big Air contest all over the place with his signature Lawn Dart move. He also did dpuble front flips. Yeah Ben.
BackFlip - Most often a rider will approach the takeoff, in a crouched position, with weight over front foot, ready to shift weight towards the back foot with the takeoff pop to start the flip. Usually the flip rotates on the Y axis and has a cartwheel look. However, there are 2 other distinct ways to back flip. One is where the rider rotates the upper body and hips to face forward in the approach to the jump and back flip more around the X Axis. Or, they could do it more Barrel Roll, where the hips and upper body stay parallel to the board and back flip around the X Axis. These are three distinct types of flips, however some riders may naturally blend a couple of them in the grey area, resulting in friends who observe the move to disagree and debate about what it was.
Wild Cat - Wild Cat is the name of a clearly cartwheel style back flip. Usually Grabbed Melon or Indy
Barrel Roll - Front Flip or Back Flip that is clearly on the X Axis, with Shoulders and Hips Parallel to the board.

Basic Spinning Take Off Lines

Snowboard Jump Tricks - Spinning

180 - 1/2 of a full rotation. Take off forward and land switch, or vice versa.
360 - 1 full rotation. Take Off Forward and land Forward, or Take Off Switch and land Switch.
540 - 1 and 1/2 rotation. Take off forward and land switch, or vice versa.
720 - 2 full rotations. Take Off Forward and land Forward, or Take-off Switch and land Switch.
900 - 2 and 1/2 rotations. Take off forward and land switch, or vice versa.
1080, etc… - 3 or more rotations, following the pattern above.

Frontside Flips and Spins

Frontside Rodeo 5 7 9 - The basic frontside rodeo is all together a 540. It essentially falls into a grey area between an off axis frontside 540 and a frontside 180 with a back flip blended into it. The grab choice and different line and pop factors can make it more flipy or more of an off-axis spin. Frontside rodeo can be done off the heels or toes and with a little more spin on the Z Axis can go to 720 or 900. It is possible to do it to a 1080 but, if there is too much flip in the spin, it can be hard not to over flip when going past 720 and 900. The bigger the Z Axis spin, the later the inverted part of the rotation should be. Gaining control on big spin rodeos, may lead to a double cork or a second flip rotation in the spin, if the rider has developed a comfort level with double flips on the tramp or other gymnastic environment.
Chicane - A chicane is a rarely done trick that involves doing a frontside 180 with a front flip on the X Axis. Opposite of the 90 roll, the chicane is frontside 90, tuck front flip, 90 degrees more to land switch, or vice versa.
Frontside Misty 5 7 9 - The Frontside misty ends up looking quite a bit like a frontside rodeo in the middle of the trick, but at take off the rider uses a more frontflip type of motion to start the trick. The frontside Misty can only be done off the toes and the rider will wind up to spin frontside, then snap their trailing shoulder towards their front foot and the lead shoulder will release towards the sky. as they unwind at takeoff release. Usually grabbing Indy the rider follows the lead shoulder through the rotation to 540, 720 and even 900.

Backside Flip/Spin Rotations

Backside Rodeo 5 7 9 - The basic backside rodeo is all together a 540. It essentially falls into a grey area between an off axis backside 540, with a release toward the heel edge and a backside 180 with a back-flip blended into it. The grab choice and variations of line and pop factors can make it more flippy or more of an off-axis spin. Backside rodeo can be done off the heels or toes, however it is usually done with a hybrid line that looks like a normal backside off the toes line, that then shifts to heel edge release just before takeoff. With a little more spin on the Z Axis, the trick can go to 720 or 900. It is possible to do it to a 1080 but, if there is too much flip in the spin, it can be hard not to over flip when going past 720 and 900. The bigger the Z Axis spin, the later the inverted part of the rotation should be. Gaining control on big spin rodeos, may lead to a double cork or a second flip rotation in the spin, if the rider has developed a comfort level with double flips on the tramp or other gymnastic environment.
90 Roll – The 90 roll is a specific version of what might be considered a Backside Rodeo. Going forward, Rider takes off of heels or toes, into a backside 90 degree rotation, to a tuck back flip on the X Axis, followed by another 90 degrees of backside rotation to land switch. Or, takeoff switch and land forward.
Falling Star - A version of the Backside Rodeo made popular by Andreas Wigg. The falling star is cool looking because at the beginning the rider will rotate 90 degrees backside and flip sideways around the Y Axis. It makes the first part of the trick look really cool as the rider backwards side flips into the rotation. Andreas does it on park jumps as well as huge natural gaps and cliffs. The trick can go to 7 easily with a turn of the head, and I think some can do it to 9 as well.
Misty Flip 5 7 9 – After a rider learns the basic backside 540 off the toes, the Misty Flip can be an easy next progression step. Misty Flip is quite different than the backside rodeo, because instead of corking over the heel edge with a back flip motion, the Misty corks off the toe edge specifically and has more of a Front Flip in the beginning of the trick, followed by a side flip coming out to the landing.

Double Flips -
Any Double Front or Double Back is a 720 on the X or Y Axis. Adding frontside or back side rotation on the X Axis will take it to 900, 1080, or 1260. Most Doubles that are a 900 or more have a blend or X and Y Axis flipping. Utilizing Rotational Momentum set at take off, many riders will shift position during the flip, manipulating the axis of rotation to accelerate or stall the rotation, there-by adding to control

Switch Jump Tricks

Switch Straight Air – Switch Straight Airs can be amazingly difficult, even for the very best riders. I love seeing people throw out a stylish Switch Method or Frontside in the park. It shows incredible control and fearlessness.
Half Cab – The Half Cab is a trick name from Skateboarding. Referencing the full Caballero, which was named after Steve Cabalerro, the Famous Pro Skater? Technically a Cabalerro is a Fakie Ollie Frontside 360. Which means that the skater, going backwards, will ollie off of the tail of the board into the frontside 360 rotation, then land fakie again. The Half Cab is just that, a half cab. Same takeoff, but just a 180 to land forward.
-Most snowboarders don’t really pay the full respect to the name because it is rare that you see a snowboarder fakie Ollie into the Cab Spin. So, if you really want to does your Cab tricks skate style add the Fakie Ollie or Switch Nollie (which are the same thing, just different names) into your take-off.
-The snowboard version can be done off of the heel or toe edge. Cab Spins are very popular and can lead to many other more advanced tricks.
Cab 3, 5, 7, etc… - The Cab takeoff, especially off of the heel edge seems to be a really easy way for many riders to spin fast and in control. It is super fun and once a rider is comfoartable with the backwards takeoff they will progress into Cab rotations quickly. Taking it to 3 5 or 7 is simply practice, enough hangtime, more snap and locking in on that landing.
Switch Backside 180, 3, 5, 7, etc… - While Cabs are common and widespread, Switch Backside is uncommon and the mark of a highly progressed and talented rider. While it is an unnatural feeling and easy to procrastinate around practicing the switch backside rotation, the feeling of accomplishment of a stomped switch backside spin is that much more rewarding. They can go off of the heel or toe edge and mirror all or the forward riding backside possibilities. Flat, Upright Spins, Mistys or Backside Rodeos are all impressive from the switch backside takeoff.
